A short (self-paid) Caribbean islands rum tour
All the mentioned rums and more were tasted by Janis .

Rhum, Rum and Ron, that means the same, but it has a wide quality range from very low up to very high quality. And to high quantities of rum may be, like all liquors, a risk to your health, you know. The right rum connoisseur drinks slowly and doesn't want to get plastered.

Let's start now our little Caribbean rum travel down at Trinidad.
There we find some good rums, among them the high quality "Royal Oak" rum made by Angostura Bitters Ltd. (you surely know the company if you interested in rum based cocktails). It's a fine stuff, you'll like it.

Now a little sidestep to the french Island Martinique, where we try a six-years old Clement, by one of Martinique's most famous distilleries nice too..

Let's hop to the self-declared inventors of rum, "..let's going to Barbados..". There, where the yearly "rum taste tests" happen. In 1998 was "Bacardi Premium Black" the second winner in category brown/dark rums... there was nothing more to say about that so-called 1998 "taste test".
But in 1999 it seems they got into the habit of testing seriously. Now there are understandable test results; they didn't mention Bacardi's mixing liquids any longer.
Barbados, is this an island or one town or both? About 800 inhabitants on sqare kilometre + tourists + some filthy rich good-for-nothings... and a very good local food and some interesting rums too. One of the most interesting I mean is a stuff called "E.S.A.F.Field white rum" Is this real rum or comes it straightly from the next gas station? Mix it with "Sprite" (this is definitivly not a connoisseurs' tip but a health advice) but it will not change that your eyes will burning... A bit better is the brown "Mount Gay Eclipse Rum", better is the Barbadians usual brown rum "Cockspur Five Star".
Old Brigand Rum"Old Brigand" brings us evidence that the producer of the mentioned E.S.A.F. liquid are able to produce good rum too ! Maybe it's plastic bottle (sold on Barbados) is a little bit astonishing. And now my Barbadian favour which isn't Steel Drums, Reggae music or what they smoke but "Cockspur V.S.O.R.", really a very special old (reserve) rum, incontestable.

We're really misjudging all the nice little good rum producing islands at the moment and we make a big jump to worlds most famous rum island, yeah you're right, I am speaking about Jamaica, the homestead of the famous Captain Morgan rum. I recommend it's pure 43% and (for mixing cocktails) 74% qualities. Look out for "Produced in Jamaica" for the genuine "Captain Morgan". In Jamaica they produce another bar standard too: Myer's Rum, the Planter's Punch Brand. I am sure you know it. Not much to say, except that it's very nice to drink it mixed and pure too. Another Jamaican rum I have to mention is "Appleton dark" , which got a very good, traditional strong flavour.

The at least eight years old, tasty five star "Barbancourt Reserve Speciale" is my recommendation on the island Hispanola. "Barbancourt" is made in Hispanola's western part, in Haiti's capital Port Au Prince.

What would be a travel into the world of Caribbean rum (or a website about it) without talking about Cuban rum ? Nada (nothing)! Cuba was the former homestead of Bacardi family (I know only one real good Bacardi rum today, it's called "Facundo", the other Bacardi rum products I know are not rum conoisseurs' choice if they aren't paid for, but Bacardi family owns many other good liquor brands and vineyards too). Today Cuba produces very high quality rums too, and every(?) rum connoisseur will find it out of the crowd because of it's special "Cuban" taste.
Most famous is the mainly exported "Havana Club Rum". It's available as young "silver-dry", three-years-old " tres anos", five-years old "cinco anos", and as a seven-years-old rum (smooth!). There is now a 12-years-old one, but I wasn't able to try it. Other Cuban rums I tested are "Santa Cruz del Norte" (my personal favour) and the very elegant "Ultima Revolucion" which is bottled in Italy. Attention U.S. residents: the mentioned Cuban rum is not available to you. It is forbidden to enjoy Cuban rum in the United States, not because there is new prohibition but because there is an U.S. embargo against Cuban products. Ask your next cigars dealer for details.

There were so many brands I wasn't able to test, and maybe that's why I am still alive...
Good-bye and don't drink'n'drive" Janis says. If you have any suggestions or comment please sign lookgoods guestbook!

And think about this: alcohol can't solve problems.
