The movie was made by Carol Reed (well-known for his famous post-war Vienna picture "The third man" written by Graham Greene too) and actor Alec Guiness in the title role. Just if you read it or if you watched the movie, then visit the city of Havana for a few days and you will feel like thehero of that book or movie.Otherwise, if you do not know the mentioned artworks, you should visit Havana too , because there are many reasons for it.(U.S.residentssurely know some Canadian or Mexican ways for visting Cuba; please leave your guns at home, boys , and better don't try to enter at Bay of Pigs / Playa Giron)
Maybe you are interested in the history of old- fashioned Cosa Nostra of the roaring 20's, 30's, 40's 'n 50's, or in the top entertainment artists of that time, then are Havana's "Hotel Nacional de Cuba" ( their guestbook, shown in the Hotelbar, is the ultimative "Who is Who" of that time!), the "Habana Riviera" or the "Habana libre" places to stay at. There are many noteworthy hotels over here. But one hotel you can really forget, that's the ostentatious new hotelblock called "Melia Cohiba", it's not a quarter as tasteful as our famous cuban "Cohiba" cigars, it's to far away from the old Havana too, but might seem to be comfortably for some spoiled rich good-for-nothings; that's my private opinion.
If you don't want to spend much money,then fly to Havana by an "Cubana" airplane, the airline was founded in the 1920's,( I forgot to mention that the I.A.T.A. was founded at the "Hotel Nacional") You can stay then for at least one or two weeks at the hotels of nearby Havana beaches (20km, 10 US$ or "Peso Convertible" to old Havana by cab or "taxi particular", which means private car).
I hope I will meet you someday and have a "Ron Collins" (or a Mojito, if you want) at Ernest Hemingway's preferred bar "La Bodeguita Del Medio", sometimes slightly overcrowded,or at some original scenes of Hemingway's "The old man and the sea" (you should ask at best some friendly, glass-polishing barkeeper for the settings of the story; to ask them all your questions about Havanian places might be an good idea). Or we meet just somewhere in free Cuba, winner of the revolution of 1959.
Another noteworthy Havana movie is "Havana" with leading man Robert Redford as a gambler in the revolutionary jumble, Lena Olin as his partner and the unforgotten, glorious Raul Julia as a revolutionary Bourgois.JanisFor a MAP OF HAVANA click HERE
